STEP Fusion: Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production
STEP Fusion is a UK-led, world-leading programme bringing government and industry together to develop fusion energy.

The STEP Fusion mission
Our mission is to generate net energy from fusion and to stimulate an industry that will help prove its commercial viability. We’ll achieve this by producing a prototype tokamak power plant – in an innovative spherical shape – to provide energy to the grid.
STEP Fusion at West Burton
Situated on the banks of the River Trent in ‘Megawatt Valley’, West Burton is a former coal-fired power station. This makes it a natural fit for the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant — a rich industrial history can now be developed and repurposed for a low carbon future.
This is a journey from fossil fuel to fusion energy. STEP is a catalyst for regional growth, and will stimulate massive social and economic benefits.
UK Industrial Fusion Solutions Ltd
UK Industrial Fusion Solutions Ltd (UKIFS), a wholly owned subsidiary of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Group, will lead the delivery of the STEP programme to design and build the UK’s first prototype fusion energy plant.
Our industrial model will combine the best of public and private sectors in an integrated alliance to deliver the STEP prototype fusion plant, with UKAEA as fusion partner alongside an engineering partner and construction partner.
Together with our partners, we will leverage the UK’s renowned status in fusion research and development to lead the delivery of a fusion sector that will help meet global energy demand in the second half of this century.
