FOSTER outreach

Fusion Opportunities in Skills, Training, Education and Research (FOSTER): Inspiring the next generation into careers in fusion energy.

We need to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, project managers and other professionals to achieve our goal of bringing fusion energy to the grid.

FOSTER (Fusion Opportunities in Skills, Training, Education and Research) supports UKAEA’s dedicated educational outreach programme, enhancing it with initiatives and events to help achieve our goal of getting more fusion into the curriculum.

FOSTER works with partners to show the wide range of careers available across the fusion energy sector. Our goal is to make sure everyone feels welcome in our industry, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Teachers conference and workshops

FOSTER offers UK teachers the opportunity to learn about fusion energy and the career prospects it presents for their students. It is also a great opportunity to network and share best practice.

Each summer, FOSTER hosts a multi-day conference for teachers in Oxfordshire. This event will feature presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and a tour of UKAEA’s facilities at Culham Campus.

We understand that there are time and travel constraints. Our one-day workshop can bring the world of fusion energy to venues across the country.

Primary Engineer

UKAEA has partnered with Primary Engineer to engage and inspire young people through engineering. This partnership supports Primary Engineer’s ‘If you were an engineer, what would you do?’ national STEM competition which is open to all pupils aged 3 to 19 in primary and secondary schools (including home educated).

Primary Engineer is an educational not-for-profit organisation founded in 2005 which engages both primary and secondary school pupils and teachers with the vast and inspirational world of engineering and technology. They work with businesses and industry across the UK to help develop a future, diverse generation of engineering and technology professionals.

Schools outreach

UKAEA offers educational outreach visits to Culham Campus, where students can come and learn about fusion energy, and the research developing fusion as a sustainable power source. These visits include:

  • an introductory talk
  • an overview of fusion energy and UKAEA’s research areas
  • a tour of the facilities at Culham Campus – where cutting-edge science and engineering can be seen up-close

All visits are tailored to the background knowledge of the groups.

UKAEA can also deliver sessions within schools near our sites in Oxfordshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire. Please get in touch to find out more about current offerings at both primary and secondary level.
