Open events at UKAEA

Do you want to learn more about UKAEA’s fusion energy research? We host free open events to give you the chance to see what we do and meet the scientists and engineers developing fusion energy.

Our open events at Culham Campus include:

  • an introductory talk
  • a tour of the record-breaking fusion machine – the Joint European Torus (JET)
  • a tour of either the MAST Upgrade fusion experiment, Remote Applications in Challenging Environments (RACE) robotics centre, or the Materials Research Facility (MRF)
  • lots of opportunities to get expert answers to your questions about fusion energy

We put open events on our events page where you will be able to get details and register.

Notes for our in-person open events

Notes for our in-person events are:

  • children below the age of 12 are not allowed to attend the in-person events
  • anyone below the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult
  • a significant amount of walking is involved during the tours
  • if you have a pacemaker or similar medical implant, let us know when you register
  • you will need to wear a hard hat on parts of the tour – it will be provided

Schools and colleges

Secondary schools

We run site and virtual visits for educational groups from secondary schools and colleges. A visit to our fusion facilities at our Oxfordshire site based at Culham Campus:

  • lets GCSE and A-level students (or equivalents) tour around our site and inside our facilities
  • demonstrates what a world-class active STEM research workplace is like day-to-day
  • allows students to get up close to the experiments

Primary schools

We have some age restrictions for site visits so teachers should sign up to our mailing list and we can let you know about opportunities.

Teachers and school governors

Teachers and school governors can sign up to our mailing list. You will receive emails advertising up-coming visit opportunities as well as other relevant educational resources or outreach events.

Please note this mailing list is for teachers and governors of schools or colleges.

Notes for school visits

Notes for our school visits are:

  • presentations and tours are tailored to the group concerned – and a typical visit lasts between two to five hours
  • visits are offered to groups of between 8 and 40 people
  • a significant amount of walking is involved during the tours
  • if you have a pacemaker or similar medical implant, let us know when you register
  • you will need to wear a hard hat on parts of the tour – it will be provided
  • you must bring one teacher for every ten students

Students and parents

If you are a student or parent, we encourage you to contact your school to organise group visits.

You can find work experience opportunities with us on our careers website.
