SUMMARY:Remote Operations in Challenging Environments Training Course
DESCRIPTION:What does it take to maintain or decommission a plant using remotely operated robots and cameras?\n\n\n\nThis course aims to provide managers\, designers and operators with a broad view of the Remote Operations specialism including: \n\n\n\n\ndesign and specification of remotely operated equipment\n\n\n\nrules for tool design\n\n\n\nsoftware infrastructure must-haves for efficiency\, safety and accountability\n\n\n\nrisk reduction measures in high consequence environments\n\n\n\nbuilding a remote operations team – people\, processes and culture\n\n\n\nplant design considerations\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho this course is for?\n\n\n\nThis course is designed for professionals involved in strategy\, design and operations from organisations: \n\n\n\n\nat the concept design stage – seeking to understand how to ‘design for remote’ and its impact on commercial viability\n\n\n\nwithout remote operations experience – needing to learn how to develop a functioning system and build a successful team\n\n\n\naiming to operate ‘safer\, faster\, more cost‑effectively’ – looking to introduce human-in-the-loop remote operations\n\n\n\nlooking to upskill their workforce in remote operations while leveraging existing remote infrastructure and facilities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur approach\n\n\n\nInteractive and engaging courses: discussions and hands-on sessions reinforce the core principles. \n\n\n\nUse of industry-leading robotic equipment at RACE for firsthand experience. \n\n\n\nUniversal application of principles: While the principles taught have been developed in the fusion sector\, they are relevant to any environment where remote equipment is used and mistakes could be costly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRemote handling at UKAEA\n\n\n\nRACE is the UKAEA’s centre for Remote Applications in Challenging Environments. Its Remote Handling Team has been remotely maintaining the Joint European Torus (JET)\, a fusion machine located in Oxfordshire\, since the 1980s. Currently\, in its decommissioning phase\, JET is being stripped from the inside out using teleoperated equipment deployed on robotic booms. \n\n\n\nWith over 30\,000 hours of in-vessel operational experience\, RACE provides training and consultancy services to remote handling teams in the UK\, the US\, Sweden and Fukushima in Japan\, spanning the fusion\, big science and nuclear decommissioning sectors. \n\n\n\nUtilising robotics to perform tasks ensures the safety of personnel by keeping them out of hazardous environments\, speeds up task completion and reduces costs. Such specialised experience is rare in the industry due to the time required to develop it. Through this course\, we aim to share our knowledge and equip professionals across various sectors with the essential skills for remote operations. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Remote Handling Training Course – developing skills with UKAEA.\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:UKAEA Exhaust Code Workshop 2026
DESCRIPTION:The UKAEA Exhaust Code Workshop (ECW) is a space where both developers and users of exhaust-relevant codes can share progress that might not normally make it to a conference talk or a paper: implementation details\, challenges\, half-started (but interesting) ideas\, what didn’t work and what worked well. \n\n\n\nBuilding on the huge success of the Hermes-3 workshop in 2024 and its 2025 edition under the ECW name\, we are now making the workshop fully open and inviting broader contributions. We will still give updates on our projects\, including Hermes-3 and the GPU kinetic neutral model VANTAGE. \n\n\n\nECW2026 is a free event. Lunch will be provided.  \n\n\n\nThere will be a conference dinner – the pre-payment page will open nearer to the event.  \n\n\n\nWho can attend?\n\n\n\nECW is open to anyone involved in or interested in tokamak exhaust code development. We want to create an open\, informal and welcoming atmosphere where there are no stupid questions or stupid answers – non-experts and early-stage students are very welcome! All external visitors must bring valid photo ID\, such as a driving licence or passport. \n\n\n\nFormat\n\n\n\nWe have four focus topics this year: mean-field\, turbulence\, kinetic neutrals and research software engineering. \n\n\n\nThe program will include: \n\n\n\n\nKeynote talks from world-leading experts (30 minutes and 10 minutes questions)\n\n\n\nModerated panel discussions\n\n\n\nContributed talks (15 minutes and 5 minutes questions)\n\n\n\nLightning talks with posters (2 slides in 4 minutes and A0 poster)\n\n\n\n\nThe event will be hybrid apart from the poster session\, but we encourage you to come in person – the most useful discussions often happen over a coffee or over a beer in the evening. \n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation
